Today was Sunday, and a lot of stuff in Split, Croatia was closed. Masayo and I walked around a little while, relaxed at a cafe, and then decided to find a local bus up the coast to the town of Trogir, which was very nice but also quiet and rather desolate.

My BG was a perfect 106 when I woke up, and breakfast was muesli and yogurt, ham and eggs, and figs and coffee. I took a large Humalog shot to take care of it all.

After breakfast I went online to see if I could rent a car for tomorrow so we could drive around Dalmatia on our own. But the car rental websites didn’t make much sense — they seemed to have cars, but the price said $0. I thought that wasn’t right, and that we’d have to go do it in person at the office. The cheapest seemed to be Thrifty and Dollar.

We walked around Split some, but found things closed: the car rental places had all closed for the day already, and the tower at the church in the center of town, which you can climb for cheap, was also closed so we couldn’t go up and see the view over Split. Around 1:30 pm I checked and was 168 — not bad after the big breakfast and the walking around.

We stopped at one of the big cafes by the water’s edge for tiramisu and coffee. Masayo ordered a “white coffee” which we had been seeing on menus and were curious about. It turned out to just be coffee with milk. But on the menu there was another item called “coffee with milk”, and also a “coffee with cream”. So we still don’t know what white coffee really is. The tiramisu was good though. Of course, I had a Humalog shot at the table for it.

Masayo then had the smart idea that since we had nothing special to do in Split, we should go over to Trogir, which we had been discussing for a few days. It turns out that buses left Split for Trogir frequently, so we got tickets at the bus station and took off. It took about half an hour to get there.

Trogir is small, and the old town is enclosed by a well-preserved town wall. It’s full of little winding alleyways and old-looking buildings. Just outside the walls is the coastline, with a harbor full of boats, and an old fortress. While in one of the little alleys, most of which had closed shops and almost no people walking around, I checked and was 118. An excellent day of BGs so far.

There are buses back to Split every thirty minutes, and when the next one came it was a big, long bus in two parts with an accordion thing in the middle, to allow it to bend in half around curves. This bus was more local, and took over 45 minutes to get back to Split, stopping at countless little stops.

In Split we stopped by the grocery store and then Masayo cooked up some dinner for is: fish sticks with salad, and soup and crackers. I had a beer too.

Unfortunately, and rather surprisingly, my BG was up to 280 by 11 pm. I took my usual corrective Humalog. When I graph my daily BGs out, there is a clear spike way up after dinner. Fixing this trend remains my main goal.

#bgnow 280 after dinner. Frustrating. But I only guessed at the carbs so it's not totally shocking. The image behind me is a poster in our room, by the way, not actually New York City.

I hope we can rent a car tomorrow.
